A creek bend after summer rain
Wet gravel, alder leaves, and a low sound of water made a familiar bend feel newly present after rain.
The creek bend looked darker after the rain, not larger exactly, but more present. Water moved under the leaning branches with a low sound that had not been there the day before.
Summer rain changes a path quickly. Dust disappears, stones take on color, and the plants at the edge of the track seem to lean further in.
I walked slowly around the bend because the ground was slick in places, and because there was no reason to hurry. The note belongs to that pace.
The best part of the walk was not the water itself, but the way it changed the sound of the path. Gravel shifted softly underfoot, and every step seemed closer to the creek than usual.
On the far side, small leaves held beads of water long after the rain had stopped. They made the shaded turn feel cooler than the open grass behind it.
I kept the description short in the notebook because the place was not asking for a large explanation. It was enough to say the bend sounded different after rain.
When I passed back through, the light had lifted a little, but the stones still held the darker color of the morning.
